About Rosemarie Kuptana

Rosemarie Kuptana was born in the year 1954, Rosemarie Kuptana grew up in a traditional Inuit hunting society and only spoke her language Inuvialuktun until the age of eight.

At the age eight, Rosemarie Kuptana was taken away by the police from her family and community to attend a government private school for Native children. She was forced to speak only English.
She struggles to stand into European Canadian culture helped Rosemarie Kuptana determination throughout her adult life and to encourage Inuit culture and protect the Inuit right to self-determination.
Rosemarie Kuptana became involved in Inuit organizations around the year 1975 when discussions first began between Inuit and the Government of Canada to reach agreements about Inuit land rights.

In 1979, Rosemarie began a career in broadcasting in the Northern Service Branch of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Her programs were based on the cultural, social and political issues of the day.

Rosemarie Kuptana joined the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) after.

From 1986 to 1989, she was an Canadian Vice President for the Inuit's.

From April 1991 to June 1996, Rosemarie Kuptana was the President of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada and the national political voice of Inuit in Canada.

Rosemarie Kuptana is known as a person who is always prepared to protect the Inuit right to self determination and the equal rights for Native people.
